Propriétés

  • L'acide usnique (de couleur jaune pâle) protège les lichens d'une trop grande exposition à la lumière et des invertébrés qui n'apprécient pas leur goût
  • Anti-infectieux :
    • L’acide usnique est antibiotique vis-à-vis des Gram +, il inhibe Bacillus diphteriae, Bacillus pumillus, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus sp, Enterococcus, mycobacteries, germes anaérobies (Bacteroides, Clostridium [1], certains germes résistants [2], Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli [3], l’acide usnique apparaît pour ces raisons dans des formulations cosmétiques de crèmes, dentifrices, déodorants, écrans solaires [4]
    • Antimycobactérien [5]
    • Inhibe la formation de biofilms bactériens sur les surfaces [6]
    • Anticandidosique [7]
    • Antiviral, antiprotozoaires
  • Anti-ostéoporotique en inhibant l’activité des ostéoclastes médiée par RANKL (receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand) [8]
  • Effet anti-inflammatoire par inhibition de l' expression du TNF-α et d’iNOS, diminue le niveau de TNF-α dans les macrophages RAW264.7 stimulés par le LPS, de manière dose-dépendante [9]
  • Anti-inflammatoire [10], antalgique
  • Antimitotique (adjuvant dans les cancers du poumon), antiprolifératif [11]
  • Utilisé comme agent de conservation dans la cosmétologie
  • Antiherbivores, anti-insectes
  • Aide à la perte de poids
  • Stimule la phosphorylation oxydative

Effets indésirables

  • Quelques cas décrits d'hépatite fulminante à la suite de la prise d'acide unique pur à forte dose en vue de perdre du poids [12], [13]
  • La toxicité est en cours d’évaluation par la FDA [14]
