Description et habitat

  • Originaire d'Asie tropicale, petit arbre de 5 mètres qui présente des feuilles vertes, lisses et ovales. Les fleurs blanches très parfumées donneront de petits fruits ronds comme une orange miniature, vert foncé puis jaune à maturité
  • Huile essentielle provient d’Italie, Côte d'Ivoire
  • Le bergamotier s'épanouit préférentiellement sous des climats tempérés ou tropicaux à des températures comprises entre 13 et 39 °C. En dessous de -3 °C, la récolte est détruite et à -11 °C, l'arbre meurt

Propriétés de la plante

  • Les flavonoïdes de l'écorce sont antibactériens [1]
  • Le jus est hypolipidémiant [2], [3], avec des principes actifs d'effet proche de celui des statines (brutiéridine, mélitidine) [4], par effet sur l'HMGCoA réductase (3-hydroxy-3-méthylglutaryl-CoA reductase) [5], [6]
  • Les coumarines (bergamottine et 5-géranyloxy-7-méthoxycoumarine ou 5-G-7-MOC) diminuent la prolifération des cellules de neuroblastome humain SH-SY5Y [7]
  • Le 5-MOP est un mélatoninergique puissant (il stimule la sécrétion de mélatonine chez l’humain), surtout en administration vespérale [8], [9]
  • Les Citrus et surtout la bergamote contiennent des dérivés de la tryptamine [10]
  • La mélatonine de synthèse semble dégradée trop rapidement pour avoir un effet biologique
    • La mélatonine serait impliquée dans la dépression (les dépressifs bronzent peu, brûlent au soleil, et ont des problèmes de libido)

Propriétés de l'huile essentielle

  • HE calmante, sédative du système nerveux central, anxiolytique, antistress par diminution du taux de corticostérone chez le rat [11] et antidépressive [12]
  • Diminue les signes de stress psychologique et d'anxiété, diminue le cortisol salivaire, parasympathicotonique [13]
  • Réduit les symptômes d'anxiété liée au stress ou avant une intervention chirurgicale [14], les troubles de l'humeur légers et certains syndromes douloureux [15], [16]
  • L’inhalation d’huile essentielle de bergamote diminue l’anxiété préopératoire [17]
  • Neuroprotectrice, prévention de l'accumulation du glutamate [18], [19]
  • Antidépressive, entre autres par le 5-MOP [20] et mélatoninergique [21]
  • Antihypertensive [22]
  • Antibactérienne, l'huile essentielle de bergamote et ses principaux composants (limonène, acétate de linalyle, linalol) montre une activité antimycoplasmique intéressante in vitro (souches de Mycoplasma hominis, Mycoplasma fermentans, Mycoplasma pneumoniae) [23]
    • Utilisable dans la conservation des aliments [24]
  • Antalgique (linalol, acétate de linalyle) [25], par effet opioïde [26]
  • Antispasmodique
  • Carminative, digestive, laxative
  • Anti-inflammatoire [27], antifongique [28]

  • Insomnies par désynchronisation
  • Inappétence, digestions difficiles, colites, dyspepsies
  • Vitiligo et dépigmentations (furanocoumarines : bergaptène (5-MOP) et 8-methoxypsoralène)
  • Acné, eczéma, psoriasis, séborrhée
  • Sevrage du tabac
  • Vitiligo (?)

Mode d'action connu ou présumé

  • L’effet anxiolytique pourrait être lié à la neurotransmission sérotoninergique [31]

Effets indésirables éventuels et précautions d'emploi

  • HE déconseillée pendant la grossesse
  • Dermocaustique, irritation cutanée possible à l'état pur
  • Cytotoxicité en usage inapproprié, l'HE peut être mortelle pour les cellules en division en activant des voies multiples [32], [33]
  • La bergamote Citrus bergamia et le lime Citrus aurantifolia sont de puissants inhibiteurs compétitifs du CYP2A6 [34]
    • L'inhibition du CYP 2A6 a été identifiée comme une approche thérapeutique possible du sevrage du tabac, donnant ainsi une intérêt significatif aux huiles essentielles de bergamote et de lime
  • Risque de photosensibilisation. Ne pas appliquer avant exposition au soleil [35]
  • L'IFRA (International Fragrance Assocation http://www.ifraorg.org/) déconseille l'utilisation de l'huile essentielle de bergamote complète (contenant des furanocoumarines) à plus de 0.4 % dans les produits cosmétiques
