Propriétés

  • Analogue structural du cholestérol (homologue éthylé en 24 du cholestérol)
  • Hypocholestérolémiant (vraisemblablement par compétition d'absorption avec le cholestérol), et plus encore par l'insaponifiable [1]
  • Anticancéreux [2], [3], [4], inhibiteur de la croissance tumorale (dose-dépendante) sur des cellules cancéreuses coliques humaines, stimulation de l'apoptose, inhibe chez le rat le nombre de cryptes aberrantes de façon dose dépendante, sans effets toxiques, dose optimale 10 à 20 mg/kg [5], inhibition de la croissance et stimulation de l'apoptose dans le cancer du sein [6], protection de la glande mammaire vis-à-vis de la toxicité de la méthyl nitrosourée, agent cancérogène [7]
  • Immunomodulant [8], stimule la prolifération des lymphocytes [9]
  • Inhibition de la lipoperoxydation des LDL [10]
  • Anti-inflammatoire sur les cellules endothéliales aortiques humaines [11]
  • La boldénone, un stéroïde anabolisant proche de la testostérone, a été suspectée d’être synthétisée à partir de bêta-sitostérol, présent dans l’alimentation animale [12], [13], [14]
  • En revanche, il n’existerait pas de formation de boldénone chez les femmes après la consommation de margarines enrichies en phytostérol [15]
  • Le béta-sitostérol-D-glucoside (BSSG) favorise la prolifération des cellules souches neurales de l'hippocampe [16]
  • Utilisé dans l'hypertrophie bénigne de la prostate [17], [18]
