Description et habitat

  • Pousse dans la Cordillière des Andes à une altitude d’environ 5000 mètres, principalement au Pérou

Histoire et tradition

  • Les Incas l’utilisaient pour endurcir leurs guerriers
  • Un des records mondiaux de plante cultivée en altitude
  • Utilisée par les Incas depuis sans doute plusieurs millénaires [1]
  • Ce fut un cas exemplaire de bio-piraterie, elle fut exportée illégalement par un ethnobotaniste de l’Université du Massachusets, qui revendait à la firme Pure World Botanical (appelée ensuite Naturex), laquelle voulait s'approprier les effets de la racine, après dépose de brevets qui ont été jugés illégitimes, convention sur la diversité biologique non signée par les Etats-Unis, la racine était vendue 100 fois plus cher que son prix d’achat, sans reverser au pays d’origine (Pérou)

  • Antidépresseur, améliore la faculté d'apprentissage chez la souris ovariectomisée [5]
  • Neuroprotecteur [6], [7] (maladie de Parkinson ?) [8], [9]
  • Les polysaccharides sont antioxydants [2], anti-fatigue, antitumoraux, immunomodulants, hépatoprotecteurs [10], [11]
  • Aphrodisiaque
    • Un extrait de Lepidium meyenii améliore les symptômes liés du déficit androgénique lié à l’âge (hypogonadisme tardif), avec une amélioration de la fonction érectile, sans effets indésirables prostatiques [12] et améliore le ressenti subjectif de bien-être général et sexuel chez les patients traités [13]
    • Les propriétés de stimulation de la fonction sexuelle demandent confirmation d'après une revue systématique [14]
  • Améliore le désir sexuel [15]
  • Amélioration de la spermatogenèse chez les rats mâles [16], [17], améliore la fertilité [18], inhibe les altérations de la spermatogenèse due à l'altitude [19], stimule la production de progestérone et de testostérone chez la souris [20], augmente les performances sexuelles chez le rat mâle [21]
  • Les niveaux de testostérone chez l’homme sont augmentés par l'administration orale de poudre de maca (fait l’objet d’un brevet américain) et de bois de cerf ou de wapiti [22], utilisés en Médecine Traditionnelle Chinoise
    • Le bois de cerf contient des glycosaminoglycanes [23], de l’EGF Epidermal Growth Factor [24], et des polypeptides qui favorisent la consolidation des fractures en stimulant la prolifération des chondrocytes et des précurseurs d'ostéoblastes [25]
  • Les alcaloïdes seraient régulateurs hyopothalamiques et modulateurs des sécrétions de la LH, FSH, HCG et prolactine (?), stimuleraient calcitonine et parathormone (?) et la testostérone
