  • Le genre Huperzia, autrefois inclus dans la famille des Lycopodiaceae, semble intégré aujourd'hui dans la famille des Huperziaceae

Description et habitat

  • Fougère herbacée vivace sans fleurs, à tige rampante pouvant atteindre 1 mètre de long, zones tempérées froides
  • émet des ramifications dressées couvertes de petites feuilles imbriquées et linéaires
  • Les rameaux fertiles portent des épis sporangifères jaunâtres en forme de massue

Histoire et tradition

  • Lemery rapporte que la plus grande consommation du Lycopodium se faisait sur les grands théâtres pour imiter le feu (inflammation rapide), d'où le nom vernaculaire de “soufre végétal”

Propriétés de la plante

  • Diurétique, purgative et émétique
  • La spore de lycopode, autrefois utilisée comme poudre absorbante dans les pilules, possède une forte toxicité, irritation des muqueuses
  • Les alcaloïdes (principalement l’huperzine A) pourraient être utilisés dans le traitement des myasthénies et de certains troubles de la mémoire (Alzheimer) [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11]
    • L'huperzine A est un inhibiteur des cholinestérases plus puissant que la prostigmine et semble plus efficace que le donépézil et la rivastigmine, avec une plus longue durée d’action [12], [13]
  • Inhibition de l'acétylcholinestérase par l'alpha-onocérine [14], effet controversé [15]

  • Troubles de la mémoire et maladie d'Alzheimer, l'huperzine A est précurseur du donépézil (Aricept®), inhibiteur spécifique et réversible de l'acétylcholinestérase, cholinestérase prédominante dans le cerveau
