Propriétés

  • Anti-inflammatoire et antalgique [1]
  • Sédatif, calmant du système nerveux central et légèrement tonifiant, relaxant musculaire [2]
  • Antiseptique
  • Activité antimicrobienne et antibiofilm vis-à-vis de Staphylococcus aureus [3]
    • Attention néanmoins, le citral (contenant un mélange de géranial et néral) peut augmenter la résistance de Pseudomonas aeruginosa aux antibiotiques, notamment l'imipénème, la gentamicine, la tobramycine, la ciprofloxacine et la colistine, en augmentant l’expression des pompes d’efflux [4]
    • Les composés chimiques présentant des groupes aldéhydes (cinnamaldéhyde et citral) induiraient une réponse de stress électrophile chez Pseudomonas aeruginosa, permettant d’activer des transporteurs d'efflux multidrogues (en augmentant l'expression des opérons qui codent pour divers systèmes d'efflux) [5]
  • Les citrals sont antiviraux vis-à-vis d'herpès virus I et II [6], [7], [8], vis-à-vis de la grippe A H9N2 [9], du virus de la fièvre jaune [10]
  • Antiallergique [11]
  • Légèrement œstrogénique [12], pourrait induire une hyperplasie prostatique par son action œstrogénique [13]
  • Anticancéreux [14], [15], [16]
    • Induit l'apoptose, la fragmentation de l'ADN et l'activité catalytique de la caspase-3 [17]
    • Inhibe la promotion des cancers cutanés (activité antitumorale dose-dépendante sur les cancers cutanés induits par le tétradécanoylphorbol-13-acétate ou TPA) [18]
  • Inducteur de la glutathion-S-transférase de classe P1 (surtout trans-citral = géranial)
  • Actif sur Helicobacter pylori
  • Antifongique [19], vis-à-vis de Candida albicans [20]
  • Activité d’inhibition de la tyrosinase (les citrals sont des inhibiteurs non compétitifs alors que le myrcène est un inhibiteur compétitif [21]

Effet thérapeutique

Effets indésirables

  • Pas d'effets adverses décrits, le NOAEL des citrals est très élevé (120 mg/kg chez le rongeur [22]
  • Allergies possibles
  • Non mutagène au test d'Ames [23]
  • Non carcinogène chez le rat, doute chez la souris [24]
  • Prudence en cas d’hyperplasie prostatique, une synergie entre le citral et la testostérone a été constatée, entraînant des modifications hyperplasiques de la prostate ventrale du rat [25]
  • Risque d'interactions médicamenteuses, inhibition faible du CYP2B6 [26]
