Description et habitat

  • Plantes lianoïdes, réputées pour leur souche rhizomateuse dont on collecte les racines très longues du diamètre d’un crayon
  • Smilax medica est originaire d’Amérique centrale (Mexique)
  • Smilax aspera, la salsepareille d’Europe est commune dans les bois du Midi de la France, son fruit est une petite baie globuleuse verte puis pourpre foncé voire noire à maturité
    • Les feuilles sont cordiformes, coriaces et épineuses sur les bords et sous la nervure principale, le pétiole porte deux vrilles à sa base, fleurs blanches, jaunâtres ou verdâtres, odorantes, situées à l'aisselle des feuilles

Histoire et tradition

  • Smilax medica = Smilax aristolochiaefolia : sa racine a été copieusement importée en Europe jusque vers 1930, à cause de ses propriétés antisyphillitiques
    • Elle est appelée Zarzaparilla
    • Son nom proviendrait de l'espagnol, zarzaparrilla dérivant de zarza = « ronce », et parrilla = « petite treille »
  • Smilax aspera : sa racine était utilisée au cours de l’Antiquité en Europe en couronne pour soigner les maux de tête, on la tenait pour antidote de poisons
  • Les jeunes pousses peuvent être consommées comme les asperges sauvages

    • Potentialités chimiopréventives (triterpénoïdes dérivés du cycloartane) [14]
    • Les saponosides sont diurétiques, sudorifiques, dépuratifs dans les maladies de peau, et les infections intestinales
  • Smilax medica = Smilax aristolochiaefolia
    • Autrefois utilisé comme antisyphilitique
    • Activité hématopoïétique, augmente le nombre d’érythrocytes, l’hémoglobine et l’hématocrite [15], [16]
