Description et habitat

  • Plante herbacée annuelle d’environ 60 cm de haut, d’odeur désagréable, tiges grêles striées portant des feuilles glabres et luisantes, incisées, dentées en bas et en lanières pour les supérieures
  • Petites fleurs blanches disposées en ombelles
  • Sols calcaires perméables et frais de la région méditerranéenne
  • On distingue deux variétés : coriandre à gros fruits Coriandrum sativum L. var. sativum, dont le diamètre du fruit est supérieur à 3 mm, et la coriandre à petits fruits Coriandrum sativum L. var. microcarpum D.C. (fruit rarement supérieur à 3 mm) [1]

Histoire et tradition

  • Citée dans la Bible, connue des Grecs et des Romains, son nom vient du grec “koris” désignant la punaise
  • Son odeur désagréable dite “odeur de punaise” est dégagée par la plante entière et les fruits immatures, alors que le fruit mûr possède un parfum musqué agréable
  • Au Moyen-Âge, elle figurait dans les philtres d’amour

  • Stimulation des sécrétions salivaire et gastrique, stomachique, carminative, favorise la digestion
  • Gastro-protecteur, anti-ulcéreux [4]
  • Anxiolytique et relaxant musculaire [5], anti-épileptique, anti-dépresseur, spasmolytique
  • Hypocholestérolémiant [6], stimule l’élimination biliaire du cholestérol, diminue le taux de lipides péroxydés, d'acides gras libres et de glutathion [7]
  • Détoxifiant [8]
  • Antidiabétique : retarde l’apparition du diabète, antihyperglycémiant, insulino-sécréteur, activité insuline-like [9], [10], effet insuline-like [11]
  • Antioxydant et anti-cancer [12]
  • L’utilisation de coriandre chez des poulets d’élevage maintient la flore saprophyte (Lactobacillus et Bifidobacterium) [13], d’autres métabolites secondaires de plantes (polysaccharides) préservent et renforcent la flore saprophyte (microbiote) [14]

  • Tonique digestive, antispasmodique
  • Antibactérienne [15], [16], sur bactéries Gram positives (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus spp.) et Gram négatives (Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus mirabilis, sauf Pseudomonas aeruginosa) antifongique sur Candida albicans [17], antibactérienne par action membranaire, respiratoire et sur les pompes à efflux [18]
  • Bactériostatique vis-à-vis de Salmonella enterica [19]
  • Antifongique (Candida sp.) [20], [21], [22], [23], [24], synergie entre l'HE de coriandre et l'amphotéricine B pour Candida albicans, effet additif pour la souche de C. tropicalis [25]
  • Activité sur le pied d'athlète ou intertrigo inter-orteils (traitement topique, préparation à 6%) [26]
  • L’HE obtenue par hydrodistillation classique montrerait une meilleure activité contre Staphylococcus aureus et Candida albicans que l’hydrodistillation assistée par micro-ondes [27], contredit par une autre étude [28]
  • Antalgique, euphorisante à forte dose
  • Amélioration de la mémoire par voie inhalée [29]

Indications de la plante entière (phytothérapie)

  • Troubles dyspeptiques, inappétence, ballonnements
  • Gastrites, diarrhées, douleurs abdominales
  • L’association de Coriandre à des drogues comme rhubarbe, séné, cascara, etc tempère les spasmes du colon engendrés par les anthraquinones
  • Usage externe dans les rhumatismes et douleurs articulaires
  • Impuissance (?)
    • Attention à la contamination éventuelle de feuilles mal lavées par des parasites intestinaux, dans certains pays [34], [35]

  • Giardiase (ex-lambliase) 100 mg/gélule (2 x 3 pdt 5 jours, puis 1 x 3 pdt 7 jours chez l’enfant) --formule et posologie non contrôlées--
  • Anxiété, colopathie, syndrome de l'intestin irritable [36], spasmes digestifs, spasmophilie digestive, ballonnements, aérogastrie, digestions lentes, infections et spasmes des voies urinaires
  • Impuissance (?)
  • Maladie d'Alzheimer (?)
  • Usage externe dans les rhumatismes et les mycoses cutanées (intertrigo, synergie avec le palmarosa)

Effets indésirables éventuels et précautions d'emploi

  • Bonne sécurité d'emploi comme ingrédient dans les aliments [37], avec un NOAEL (dose maximale sans effet néfaste observable) = 250 mg/kg/jour
  • Attention néanmoins à la présence de camphre
  • L’huile essentielle serait excitante à faible dose et hypnotique et anesthésiante à forte dose
  • Éviter chez la femme enceinte et le jeune enfant
  • Allergie aux Apiaceae
