Description et habitat

  • Plante grimpante à tige ligneuse originaire du Sud des Etats-Unis et du Mexique
  • Cultivée aux Etats-Unis, dans le Sud de la France, en Bretagne et en Anjou
  • Feuilles alternes profondément divisées en trois lobes aigus dont le médian est le plus développé
  • La drogue peut être falsifiée par les tiges feuillées de Passiflora edulis (qui donne le fruit de la passion), quasiment inactive [1] ou Passiflora cœrulea ornementale qui possède des feuilles pentalobées

Histoire et tradition

  • La passiflore était connue des Aztèques
  • Elle fut nommée “fleur de la Passion” par les missionnaires parce que chacun des organes de la plante rappelait les instruments de la Passion du Christ :
    • Les fleurs à trois pointes : la lance
    • Les vrilles : le fouet
    • Les trois styles de la plante : les clous
    • Les stigmates : l’éponge
  • Alors que les couleurs (blanc et pourpre bleuté) rappellent la pureté et le paradis

  • Sédative et anxiolytique [4], [5], [6] par la synergie de l’ensemble des composants [7], [8], [9]
  • L'activité anxiolytique passe par un effet sur les systèmes GABAergique [10], [11], [12], [13] et opioïde [14], par la chrysine [15], [16] et la 6-méthoxyflavanone [17]
  • Anti-adddictif, la benzoflavone trisubstituée peut contrecarrer les effets du sevrage de substances comme la morphine, les cannabinoïdes et la nicotine [18], mais aussi du sevrage alcoolique chez la souris [19]
  • Inducteur du sommeil [20], améliore la qualité subjective du sommeil [21]
  • Améliore la mémoire en favorisant la neurogenèse hippocampique chez les souris DBA/2 atteintes de troubles du sommeil, potentiels effets préventifs de la maladie d'Alzheimer [22]
  • Antispasmodique et dépresseur par le maltol (présent en faible quantité) qui entraine une relaxation musculaire
  • Les béta-carbolines sont des stimulants centraux, des IMAO, voire des hallucinogènes (l’harmine est l’un des alcaloïdes de l’Ayahuasca, Banisteriopsis caapi)
  • La 5,7-dihydroxyflavone est un ligand pour les récepteurs aux benzodiazépines
  • L’apigénine est un ligand compétitif pour les récepteurs benzodiazépiniques centraux
  • Sédatif par l’extrait aqueux ou anxiolytique par l’extrait hydro-alcoolique
  • Aphrodisiaque chez la souris [23]
  • La standardisation des extraits est très importante [24]
  • Un dérivé de l'alpha-naphthoflavone (7,8-benzoflavone) est un inhibiteur de l'aromatase

Indications

Indications de la plante entière (phytothérapie)

  • Anxiété et agitation (effet comparable à celui de l'oxazepam, sans les effets secondaires) [25], dépression, insomnie, stress, dépendances diverses [26]
  • Réduit l’anxiété sans induire de sédation dans la prémédication anesthésique avant une chirurgie [27]
  • Plante de l’agité anxieux (hyperexcitabilité cérébrale et sensorielle, sédatif central et périphérique)
  • « Plante de l’excitation nerveuse et de l’hypersensibilité neuro-sensorielle » [28] (aux bruits, odeurs, stress divers), elle apaise, détend, est active dans les syndromes de manque, sans doute grâce à sa petite quantité d’alcaloïdes indoliques
  • Addictions diverses [29], intéressante dans les sevrages aux benzodiazépines [30], [31], aux opiacés [32], [33], au cannabis [34], à l'alcool ou à la nicotine [35]
  • Insomnies et troubles du sommeil par excitation vespérale, hyperémotivité
  • Troubles de l’éréthisme cardiaque de l’adulte, états neurotoniques de l’adulte et de l’enfant
  • Enfant hyperactif instable, hyperactivité de l'adulte
  • Douleurs abdominales psychogènes, colites
  • Douleurs neuropathiques [37], allodynies, vulvodynie (6-méthoxyflavanone) [38]
  • Réponse hypophyso-surrénalienne retardée
  • Agit sur la composante spasmodique et corticale (cerveau hyperactif) de l’anxiété
  • On peut la comparer cliniquement à l'effet de Ignatia en homéopathie
  • Les patients utilisant Passiflora incarnata en extrait éthanolique font état de leur satisfaction dans une étude qualitative [39]

Effets indésirables éventuels et précautions d'emploi

  • Rares effets adverses (tachycardies, nausées, vomissements, somnolence) [41], [42]
  • Interactions pharmacologiques possibles avec les benzodiazépines (lorazepam) [43]
  • Les extraits de passiflore contenant les flavonoïdes orientine, apigénine, vitexine, pourraient interagir avec des polypeptides de transport d'anions organiques OATP2B1 et OATP1A2 et affecter ainsi l’absorption de certaines hormones (sulfates d’estrone-3, de prégnénolone, de déhydroépiandrostérone) [44]
  • Contre-indication chez les femmes enceintes (alcaloïdes)
