  • Herbe annuelle de 20 à 50 cm de haut, à tiges rameuses formant des touffes, feuilles ovales, d’un beau vert foncé (certaines variétés possèdent des feuilles de couleur rouge vineux, liée à la présence d’anthocyanes)
  • Fleurs blanc jaunâtre à rougeâtre, regroupées par 6 en verticilles
  • Plusieurs variétés de basilic sont cultivées : le grand vert, le plus commun et connu sous le nom de pistou Ocimum basilicum var. Genovese, le basilic pourpre O. basilicum purpurascens, le citronné O. basilicum citriodorum, le basilic thai, O. basilicum var. thyrsiflora, et var. dianatnejadii, ...

Propriétés de la plante

  • Antimicrobien vis-à-vis de germes d'origine alimentaire [5]
  • Antiviral, activité sur deux virus à ARN : coxsackievirus B1 et enterovirus 71 (acide ursolique) [6]
  • Stomachique, protection de la muqueuse gastrique [7], carminatif, apéritif
  • Diurétique
  • Galactagogue
  • Antioxydant (acide rosmarinique) [8]
  • Agent de chimioprévention lorsqu'il est employé dans l'alimentation (richesse en polyphénols et en flavonoïdes) [9]
  • L’extrait hydro-alcoolique de la feuille augmente la teneur hépatique en glutathion-réductase et en superoxyde dismutase, et en enzymes de détoxication, anticancéreux (s’oppose à la papillomagenèse cutanée et de la jonction œso-gastrique)
  • L’extrait hydro-alcoolique est anxiolytique [10], tout comme l'huile essentielle [11]
  • L’extrait hydro-alcoolique améliore la mémoire chez la souris [12], améliore la coordination neuromusculaire, le comportement exploratoire et anxiolytique de la souris [13]
  • Neuroprotecteur, prévient les lésions dues à l'ischémie-reperfusion au niveau cérébral [14]
  • Des extraits de Mentha spicata, Thymus vulgaris, Ocimum basilicum sont actifs in vitro contre Echinococcus granulosus, parasite responsable du kyste hydatique [15]
  • Le méthyl-chavicol (= estragole) est toxique et potentiellement cancérogène à forte dose, mais certains composés du basilic réduisent la toxicité du 1'-hydroxyestragole connu comme procarcinogène (réduisent la formation d'adduits à ADN) [16]

Propriétés de l'huile essentielle

  • Anthelmintique, insecticide
  • Peut être stupéfiante, positivante, antispasmodique puissante, neuro-régulatrice
  • Anxiolytique [11] (suspicion de propriétés cannabinoïdes dues au méthylchavicol)
  • Normalise la flore intestinale
  • Anti-inflammatoire, antalgique
  • Antioxydante [17], [18]
  • Décongestionnante veineuse et prostatique
  • Inhibitions enzymatiques, de la tyrosinase (inhibition de la pigmentation en dermatologie), de la lipoxygénase (effet anti-inflammatoire), de l'alpha-amylase et de l'alpha-glucosidase (propriété hypoglycémiantes) [19]
  • Les huiles essentielles de basilic ont une activité antioxydante, antibactérienne et antifongique et peuvent être utilisées comme agents antioxydants et antimicrobiens naturels en médecine, industrie alimentaire et cosmétique [3]
  • Antifongique [20], [21], [22]
  • Tonique digestive et hépatobiliaire
  • Activité antibactérienne sur Pseudomonas sp [23]
  • Tous les cultivars ont une activité anti-infectieuse, antibactérienne et antifongique ainsi qu' antioxydante : Ocimum basilicum var. purpureum à méthyl-chavicol (estragol) ; Ocimum basilicum var. thyrsiflora à linalol (68 %) ; Ocimum citriodorum à nérol (23 %) et citral (20,7 %)
    • L’activité antioxydante la plus élevée est celle d'Ocimum basilicum var. thyrsiflora à linalol, qui de plus inhibe fortement la tyrosinase, alors que Ocimum citriodorum a démontré l'activité antimicrobienne la plus élevée [24]
