Description et habitat

  • Plante des champs et coteaux incultes, aux tiges striées, rameuses, aux feuilles molles, supérieures divisées en lanières
  • Fleurs blanches ou rosées, groupées en ombelles dont la fleur centrale est souvent pourpre, le fruit est un akène couvert d’aiguillons
  • Europe, Etats-Unis, Asie centrale

Histoire et tradition

  • Les anciens utilisaient les parties aériennes de la carotte sauvage pour "dissiper les humeurs" et traiter la strangurie (dysurie de diverses origines et coliques néphrétiques). Ils en connaissaient les proprétés diurétiques
  • Platéarius disait cependant de la racine qu'elle n'a "aucune vertu" [1]
  • La carotte cultivée semble n'avoir été connue qu'au XVIII° siècle

Propriétés de la plante

  • Racine (la carotte) :
    • Le carotène et la bêta-cryptoxanthine sont transformés en vitamine A
    • Présence de substances hypoglycémiantes
    • Hypocholestérolémiante [8]
    • Les extraits lipidiques de racine de carotte sauvage sont hépato-protecteurs [9] par l'himachalol (2-himachalen-6-ol) et anticancer [10], inducteurs d'apoptose [11], antileucémiques in vitro [12]
    • L’extrait de carotte protège le foie des dommages dus à l’intoxication au tétrachlorure de carbone (CCl4) [13], au paracétamol, à l'alcool éthylique, à l'isoniazide [14]
    • L'extrait éthanolique de racines protège le rein de la néphrotoxicité induite par la gentamicine [15]
  • Semences (fruits, graines)
    • Les extraits de graine de carotte et l’huile essentielle sont antimicrobiens, antifongiques, herbicides, insecticides, antioxydants, contraceptifs, anti-inflammatoires, relaxants, anticancer [16]
    • L'extrait méthanolique de graines et le carotol sont antifongiques et peuvent agir comme agents phytosanitaires naturels contre les champignons pathogènes des cultures de riz [17] , et contre Alternaria alternata, pathogène fréquent des cultures de carotte [18]
    • Les extraits de fruits (graines) sont antispasmodiques, cardioprotecteurs [19], hépatoprotecteurs [20], hypolipidémiants [21], antimicrobiens, anti-inflammatoires [22], [23]
    • Néphroprotecteur, protège le rein de la néphrotoxicité induite par le cisplatine, avec Eclipta prostrata (feuilles) [24]
    • Les semences étaient utilisées autrefois dans le traitement des lithiases urinaires [25], [26]
    • Les extraits de semences sont neuroprotecteurs [27]
    • L'huile essentielle (extraite des semences) serait hépatoprotectrice, mais elle ne bénéficie pas nécessairement des mêmes propriétés que les extraits éthanoliques et surtout aqueux des fruits

  • Tonique et stimulante générale, hypertensive
  • Drainante, dépurative (hépato-rénale)
  • Hypocholestérolémiante (effet non démontré)
  • Antioxydante, hépatoprotectrice présumée
  • Anti-inflammatoire, neuroprotectrice [28]
  • Le carotol est hypocholestérolémiant et anti-oxydant, le daucol est désintoxicant et décongestionnant
  • Antibactérienne [29], active vis-à-vis de Campylobacter jejuni (méthylisoeugénol, élémicine) [30]
  • Antifongique [31], [32], [33], surtout les chémotypes à acétate de géranyle [34], et à élémicine, sans effet cytotoxique [35], active sur Botrytis cinerea, responsable de maladies cryptogamiques des cultures [36]
  • L’huile essentielle de semences et le carotol sont répulsifs des moustiques [37]
  • Régénérante cutanée en usage local, anti-rides
